SAN JOSE — Reports of a distraught woman carrying a shotgun abruptly disrupted a quiet neighborhood near Alum Rock on the 800 block of Feller Ave in San Jose early on the morning of Tuesday, January 30, 2018.
The incident began when fifty-five-year-old Terese Haddox was wandering outside her neighbor’s home with what a shotgun talking to herself. She also later threatened to shoot police. She appeared to be making threats of suicide but did not appear to be injured.
Haddox was shot by a 19-year San Jose Police veteran as she approached and raised the shotgun as if to fire it. The single shot struck Haddox in the hands, ricocheting and hitting her in the abdomen. The gunshot forced Haddox to release the firearm. The shotgun fell to the ground as she turned to enter her home and locked the door ignoring commands to stop.
A medical unit and mental health tactical unit was deployed to help try and end the standoff peacefully. Haddox, after more than an hour, exited her home and was taken into custody to receive medical treatment for her wounds. Haddox was further detained due to her initial mental state.
ABC7 News reports that Haddox’ neighbors said she was still in shock over her mother’s recent death as well as the recent death of a roommate and death of her son five years prior.
