Correctional deputies thwart attack on Sonoma County Jail inmate

SONOMA COUNTY // An attack on a Sonoma County Jail inmate has been thwarted after a fight broke out in the exercise yard earlier this week.
On February 13th shortly after 4 PM, a correctional deputy overheard a commotion in the exercise yard one of the housing modules designated for inmates under protective custody, separate from the general population.
When the deputy looked out into the exercise yard, he noticed a fight taking place. After calling for backup, he went out into the exercise yard and found 26-year-old Bernabe Martinez Ramirez repeatedly stabbing another inmate with a hairbrush that had been filed down to a point.
Fortunately, the deputy was able to break up the fight. Backup arrived shortly thereafter and Ramirez was cuffed. The victim was treated for his injuries before being taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, requiring treatment for multiple stab wounds. He was released that same day and returned to the jail at around 11:30 PM.
Ramirez had been housed with the victim since February 6th, in custody on a number of charges including DUI, battery on a peace officer, child endangerment, and several other enhancements related to prior offenses.
Officials say a motive for the attack is unclear. Detectives with the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office are currently investigating.
Ramirez is now on the hook for new charges of attempted murder and possession of a weapon in jail.
