HIGHLAND – On Wednesday afternoon a car flipped onto three officers, injuring them as they investigated an unrelated shooting.
Off-campus police activity regarding a nearby shooting caused a precautionary lockout at Warm Springs Elementary School Wednesday morning. Deputies closed Rogers Lane between 9th and Baseline while investigators determined that unknown suspects fired a gun for unknown reasons.
Two unknown suspects escaped in a dark-colored sports-utility vehicle. Then, San Bernardino County Sheriff Tweeted, “While on-scene, a vehicle collided into a stopped car and three law enforcement officers were injured. A PIO is enroute to the scene.”
The unlicensed driver in a 2018 Nissan Sentra, Hugo Pineda (20) Jr. of Highland, hit two SBSD emergency vehicles. Then he flipped and launched it onto a patrol sergeant, a patrol deputy, and a district attorney’s investigator supervisor.
An airlift took patrol officer Sgt. Jeremy Dean to the hospital. An ambulance whisked away Deputy Jonathan Ramstad and District Attorney’s Investigator Supervisor Tom Boyles. All three are currently in stable condition and expected to recover from their major injuries.
Primary Investigators Deputies Steffler and Salinas of the Region 1 Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) responded to the collision scene. Pineda did not appear to be intoxicated nor under the influence, and had no driver’s license.
