Accused Winters Murderer Arrested While In Jail; Could Face Additional Charges
A well known murder suspect was allegedly caught with an improvised knife in the Yolo County Jail. William Carl Gardner III is accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend to death while she sat in her SUV parked on Railroad Avenue outside her downtown Winters workplace the morning of November 18, 2013.
Gardner was arrested inside the jail on January 16 after jail staff discovered the sharpened object in his possession. According to Captain Robin Faille, commander of the jail, Gardner had transformed an object found inside the jail’s walls into the weapon; she did not provide specific details as to what the object had originally been. Nevertheless, Gardner was arrested while in custody for being a prisoner in possession of the weapon and on suspicion of contriving this weapon.
However, as of February 13, no additional charges had been filed against Gardner. The Yolo County District Attorney’s Office declined a request by the Davis Enterprise to comment on the confiscation of Gardner’s improvised weapon. Meanwhile, Yolo County Superior Court Judge David Rosenberg scheduled a preliminary hearing for Gardner, 30, a Sacramento resident, which will take place on March 26 in connection with the death of Leslie Pinkston, his ex-girlfriend whom he is alleged to have killed after a series of stalking incidents.

Gardner was caught by the U.S. Marshall’s Service in Las Vegas after a three week nationwide manhunt. Gardner pleaded not guilty to the murder charges, including a special circumstance enhancement of “lying in wait.” Yolo County prosecutors have not announced whether or not they will seek the death penalty in the case.
