During the execution of the search warrant, Sheriff’s deputies uncovered evidence typically associated with the breeding and training of roosters for illegal cockfighting purposes. A total of approximately 350 roosters, hens, and chicks were seized from the premises. These animals were subsequently turned over to the Monterey County SPCA, with plans for euthanasia.
Jose Francisco Gaitan, 73, of Salinas, was contacted during the operation. In addition to the discovery of numerous code enforcement violations, Gaitan was found to be associated with the illegal cockfighting activity. As a result, a request for charges against Gaitan will be forwarded to the Monterey County District Attorney for violation of 597j PC, Possession of Fighting Birds.
