Man fires at deputy, is shot, survives for jail

On the night of April 6 a suspicious vehicle at the 7900 block of Soquel Drive attracted the attention of deputies.

Two people were in the car, and deputies recognized the driver – 40-year-old Eli Burry. They also noticed that he was armed with a handgun.

In the attempt at detaining Burry, the suspect fired a shot from his firearm. Deputies returned fire and struck Burry.

The suspect is expected to survive.  “Several weapons were recovered at the scene.”

The SCCSO concludes, “The deputies and passenger were not injured during the incident. The Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office is now investigating the Officer Involved Shooting. The names of the deputies involved and the body worn camera footage is expected to be released next week. The suspect is expected to face several charges for weapons violations and violent felonies.”
