Copper Theft Suspect Reportedly Arrested in Campbell
CAMPBELL, CA — “The Campbell Police Department continues to lead in the use of advanced technology to help solve and prevent crime. On Monday, July 7, 35-year-old Derek Bankston of San Jose was arrested following an investigation that leveraged our Real Time Intelligence Center’s public safety cameras and automated license plate readers (ALPR).
On June 16, 2025, at approximately 8:46 a.m., Campbell officers responded to a report of a burglary at a construction site on Christopher Avenue. This marked the fourth theft reported at the same property in recent months. In this latest incident, a suspect had cut through a fence to gain access to the site and stole approximately 25 copper pipes and electrical wiring. The stolen materials were estimated to be worth between $1,500 and $3,000, with total damage estimated at $10,000.
Utilizing surveillance footage from neighboring properties and our department’s technology, investigators identified the vehicle involved in the burglary. The vehicle was later traced to a recycling facility, where the stolen property had been sold. Through continued investigation, detectives identified Derek Bankston as the suspect.
Bankston, who was on Post Release Community Supervision (PRCS) for a similar offense, was arrested for burglary and violation of his PRCS terms. He remains in custody.
‘Our officers and investigators continue to show what’s possible when experience meets innovation,’ said Chief Gary Berg. ‘Thanks to the dedication of our team and the use of advanced investigative tools, we were able to hold this individual accountable and help prevent further theft in our community.’
The Campbell Police Department remains committed to using technology, investigating crimes to the full extent, and community partnerships to enhance public safety.”
