BERKELEY — A drifter with a criminal record who frequents the San Francisco Bay Area is in jail again. This time David E. Godwin, 56, was booked for a bank robbery in downtown Berkeley.
On April 10 at 10:29 a.m., Berkeley police were alerted that a bank robbery was in progress. Godwin was located as he was rushing away from Bank of America, located at 2151 Shattuck Avenue.

Godwin started running when he saw the police arrived on the scene shortly after 10:30 a.m. He ran inside the lobby of another nearby bank, where officers detained him.
Officers recovered wads of cash that Godwin was holding in his hands, before handcuffing and arresting him. When officers searched him, they found a large knife that he allegedly used in the B of A robbery.
Godwin remains in custody at Alameda County’s Santa Rita Jail. His charges are second-degree robbery and committing a new felony while on parole.
Godwin also has an unrelated charge pending against him for exhibiting a deadly weapon in November 2020. In 2016, Godwin was convicted of second-degree robbery. He was sentenced to two years in state prison.
In 2011, he was convicted of first-degree robbery. For this Godwin was sentenced to 42 days in jail and 5 years of probation. In addition, Godwin was also previously arrested for battery, robbery of passenger on public transportation, among other offenses.
